A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Symantec pcAnywhere up to 12.5. This issue affects some unknown functionality of the component CHF File Handler. Format string vulnerability in Symantec pcAnywhere before 12.5 SP1 allows local users to read and modify arbitrary memory locations, and cause a denial of service (application crash) or possibly have unspecified other impact, via format string specifiers in the pathname of a remote control file (aka .CHF file).
The weakness was shared 03/18/2009 by Deral Heiland with Layered Defense as SYM09-003 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at securityresponse.symantec.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2009-0538 since 02/12/2009. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. A simple authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 35976 (Symantec pcAnywhere CHF File Pathname Format String Denial of Service), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 116298 (Symantec pcAnywhere Format String Denial of Service Vulnerability).
