A vulnerability has been found in Pro Chat Rooms 3.0.2 (Chat Software) and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code block of the file sendData.php. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Directory traversal vulnerability in Pro Chat Rooms 3.0.2 allows remote authenticated users to select an arbitrary local PHP script as an avatar via a .. (dot dot) in the avatar parameter, and cause other users to execute this script by using sendData.php to send a message to (1) an individual user or (2) a room, leading to cross-site request forgery (CSRF), cross-site scripting (XSS), or other impacts.
The weakness was disclosed 03/20/2009 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at xforce.iss.net. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2008-6502 since 03/20/2009. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be launched remotely. The requirement for exploitation is a single authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1006 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
A public exploit has been developed by ZynbER and been published even before and not after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. By approaching the search of inurl:sendData.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
