Details
A vulnerability was found in Apache Struts up to 2.1.2 Beta (Programming Tool Software). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown part of the file struts. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:
Multiple directory traversal vulnerabilities in Apache Struts 2.0.x before 2.0.12 and 2.1.x before 2.1.3 allow remote attackers to read arbitrary files via a ..%252f (encoded dot dot slash) in a URI with a /struts/ path, related to (1) FilterDispatcher in 2.0.x and (2) DefaultStaticContentLoader in 2.1.x.
The weakness was shared 03/23/2009 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at vupen.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2008-6505 since 03/23/2009. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1006 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 34946 (Apache Struts 2 < 2.0.12 / 2.1.3 Dispatcher Directory Traversal), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 12501 (Apache Struts Dispatcher Directory Traversal Vulnerability(s2-004)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8861.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (46329), Exploit-DB (32565), Tenable (34946), SecurityFocus (BID 32104†) and OSVDB (49733†). Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
