Apple iOS up to 5.01 WebKit memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Apple iOS up to 5.01 (Smartphone Operating System). This issue affects some unknown functionality of the component WebKit. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

WebKit, as used in Apple iOS before 5.1 and iTunes before 10.6, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption and application crash) via a crafted web site, a different vulnerability than other WebKit CVEs listed in APPLE-SA-2012-03-07-1 and APPLE-SA-2012-03-07-2.

The weakness was disclosed 03/07/2012 by Dirk Schulze (Slawomir Blazek) with Google Chrome Security Team as HT5191 as confirmed knowledge base article (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at support.apple.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with Apple. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2011-2867 since 07/20/2011. The attack may be initiated remotely. A simple authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $100k and more. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 58319 (Apple iTunes < 10.6 Multiple Vulnerabilities (credentialed check)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 119974 (Apple iTunes Prior to 10.6 Multiple Vulnerabilities (APPLE-SA-2012-03-07-1)).

Upgrading to version 5.1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at trac.webkit.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (73796), Tenable (58319), SecurityFocus (BID 52365†), OSVDB (79906†) and Secunia (SA48274†). The entries VDB-4460, VDB-4459, VDB-4726 and VDB-4728 are pretty similar. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
