Sun Java System Identity Manager (IdM) 7.0 through 8.0 on Linux, AIX, Solaris, and HP-UX permits "control characters" in the passwords of user accounts, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary commands via vectors involving "resource adapters."
The weakness was released 03/25/2009 by Alex with Security Compass (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at sunsolve.sun.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2009-1083 since 03/25/2009. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. Required for exploitation is a simple authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
A public exploit has been developed in Perl. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k.
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem.
