Hannonhill Cascade 5.7 code injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Hannonhill Cascade 5.7 and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Hannon Hill Cascade Server 5.7 and other versions allows remote authenticated users to execute arbitrary programs or Java code via a crafted XSLT stylesheet with "extension elements and extension functions" that trigger code execution by Xalan-Java, as demonstrated using xalan://java.lang.Runtime.

The weakness was presented 03/25/2009 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at xforce.iss.net. This vulnerability was named CVE-2009-1088 since 03/25/2009. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. A single authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.

A public exploit has been developed by Emory University in XML and been published even before and not after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 6 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (49332), Exploit-DB (8247), SecurityFocus (BID 34186†) and Secunia (SA34389†). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
