Linux Kernel 3.15.1 aio_read_events_ring array index

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Linux Kernel 3.15.1. Affected is the function aio_read_events_ring. The manipulation leads to array index. This vulnerability is documented as CVE-2014-0206. There is not any exploit available.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 3.15.1 (Operating System). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects the function aio_read_events_ring. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a array index vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-129. The product uses untrusted input when calculating or using an array index, but the product does not validate or incorrectly validates the index to ensure the index references a valid position within the array. Impacted is confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

Array index error in the aio_read_events_ring function in fs/aio.c in the Linux kernel through 3.15.1 allows local users to obtain sensitive information from kernel memory via a large head value.

The weakness was released 06/25/2014 by Mateusz Guzik as Linux kernel: kernel memory disclosure in io_getevents() as confirmed mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is shared at seclists.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-0206 since 12/03/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 78311 (Amazon Linux AMI : kernel (ALAS-2014-368)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350361 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for kernel: ALAS-2014-368).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (93944), Tenable (78311), SecurityFocus (BID 68176†), Secunia (SA59278†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1030479†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-13585, VDB-43527 and VDB-65956. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
