The Java Plug-in in Java SE Development Kit (JDK) and Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 12, 11, and 10 allows user-assisted remote attackers to cause a trusted applet to run in an older JRE version, which can be used to exploit vulnerabilities in that older version, aka CR 6706490.
The weakness was presented 03/25/2009 by Gregory Fleischer (regenrecht) (Website). The advisory is shared at sunsolve.sun.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2009-1105 since 03/25/2009. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 46674 (Mac OS X : Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 2), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
