A vulnerability was found in Orbitdownloader Orbit Downloader up to 2.8.1. It has been rated as critical. Argument injection vulnerability in orbitmxt.dll 2.1.0.2 in the Orbit Downloader 2.8.7 and earlier ActiveX control allows remote attackers to overwrite arbitrary files via whitespace and a command-line switch, followed by a full pathname, in the third argument to the download method.
The bug was discovered 03/23/2009. The weakness was shared 03/26/2009 by Janek Vind "waraxe" with waraxe (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at milw0rm.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2009-1064 since 03/24/2009. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 116313 (Orbit Downloader ActiveX Control "download()" Method Arbitrary File Delete Vulnerability).
