Cisco IOS 12.3/12.4 Subsystem path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability was found in Cisco IOS 12.3/12.4 and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects unknown code of the component Subsystem. Executing a manipulation can lead to path traversal. This vulnerability is registered as CVE-2009-0634. No exploit is available. It is advisable to implement a patch to correct this issue.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Cisco IOS 12.3/12.4 (Router Operating System) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown code of the component Subsystem. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:

Multiple unspecified vulnerabilities in the home agent (HA) implementation in the (1) Mobile IP NAT Traversal feature and (2) Mobile IPv6 subsystem in Cisco IOS 12.3 through 12.4 allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (input queue wedge and interface outage) via an ICMP packet, aka Bug ID CSCso05337.

The bug was discovered 03/25/2009. The weakness was published 03/27/2009 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at cisco.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2009-0634 since 02/18/2009. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 49031 (Cisco IOS Software Mobile IP and Mobile IPv6 Vulnerabilities - Cisco Systems), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CISCO and running in the context c. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 43159 (Cisco IOS Software Mobile IP and Mobile IPv6 Vulnerabilities (cisco-sa-20090325-mobileip)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (49585), Tenable (49031), SecurityFocus (BID 34241†), OSVDB (53127†) and Secunia (SA34438†). Similar entries are available at VDB-47383, VDB-47382, VDB-47381 and VDB-47379. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
