A vulnerability has been found in UMN MapServer up to 5.2.1 and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function msLoadQuery of the component Error Message Handler. The msLoadQuery function in mapserv in MapServer 4.x before 4.10.4 and 5.x before 5.2.2 allows remote attackers to determine the existence of arbitrary files via a full pathname in the queryfile parameter, which triggers different error messages depending on whether this pathname exists.
The bug was discovered 03/26/2009. The weakness was presented 03/31/2009 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at lists.osgeo.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2009-0843 since 03/06/2009. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Upgrading to version 4.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 8 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
