Details
A vulnerability was found in Apple iOS up to 5.01 (Smartphone Operating System) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality of the component WebKit. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
WebKit, as used in Apple iOS before 5.1 and iTunes before 10.6, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption and application crash) via a crafted web site, a different vulnerability than other WebKit CVEs listed in APPLE-SA-2012-03-07-1 and APPLE-SA-2012-03-07-2.
The weakness was presented 03/07/2012 by Sergio Villar Senin (Slawomir Blazek) with Apple as HT5190 as confirmed knowledge base article (Website). The advisory is shared for download at support.apple.com. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2012-0605 since 01/12/2012. The attack may be launched remotely. A simple authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 58319 (Apple iTunes < 10.6 Multiple Vulnerabilities (credentialed check)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 119974 (Apple iTunes Prior to 10.6 Multiple Vulnerabilities (APPLE-SA-2012-03-07-1)).
Upgrading to version 5.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (73824), Tenable (58319), SecurityFocus (BID 52364†), OSVDB (79927†) and Secunia (SA48274†). See VDB-4460, VDB-4459, VDB-4574 and VDB-4726 for similar entries. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
