Details
A vulnerability was found in OpenAFS up to 1.2.7 (File Transfer Software) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown code block. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Heap-based buffer overflow in the cache manager in the client in OpenAFS 1.0 through 1.4.8 and 1.5.0 through 1.5.58 on Unix platforms allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (system crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via an RX response containing more data than specified in a request, related to use of XDR arrays.
The bug was discovered 04/06/2009. The weakness was presented 04/08/2009 by Rick (Website). The advisory is shared at openafs.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2009-1251 since 04/06/2009. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 36135 (Debian DSA-1768-1 : openafs - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 175193 (Debian Security Update for OpenAFS (DSA-1768)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (49742), Tenable (36135), SecurityFocus (BID 34407†), OSVDB (55274†) and Secunia (SA34655†). See VDB-47632 for similar entry. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
