Gravity Board X 2.0 code injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Gravity Board X 2.0 (Forum Software) and classified as critical. This issue affects some unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Static code injection vulnerability in forms/ajax/configure.php in Gravity Board X (GBX) 2.0 BETA allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary PHP code into config.php via the configure action to index.php.

The weakness was released 04/09/2009 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at milw0rm.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2009-1278 since 04/09/2009. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

A public exploit has been developed by brain[pillow] in Perl and been published before and not just after the advisory. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 6 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (49679), Exploit-DB (8350) and SecurityFocus (BID 34370†). Entry connected to this vulnerability is available at VDB-47650. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
