Details
A vulnerability was found in Apple iOS up to 5.01 (Smartphone Operating System). It has been classified as critical. This affects an unknown function of the component WebKit. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
WebKit, as used in Apple iOS before 5.1 and iTunes before 10.6, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption and application crash) via a crafted web site, a different vulnerability than other WebKit CVEs listed in APPLE-SA-2012-03-07-1 and APPLE-SA-2012-03-07-2.
The weakness was disclosed 03/07/2012 by Martin Barbella (Slawomir Blazek) with Google Chrome Security Team as HT5190 as confirmed knowledge base article (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at support.apple.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with Apple. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2012-0624 since 01/12/2012. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. The successful exploitation requires a authentication. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 01/11/2025). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product increasing in the near future.
A private exploit has been developed by Martin Barbella. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 58319 (Apple iTunes < 10.6 Multiple Vulnerabilities (credentialed check)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 119974 (Apple iTunes Prior to 10.6 Multiple Vulnerabilities (APPLE-SA-2012-03-07-1)).
Upgrading to version 5.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (73843), Tenable (58319), OSVDB (79946†), Secunia (SA48274†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1026774†). The entries VDB-4460, VDB-4459, VDB-4574 and VDB-4726 are pretty similar. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
