Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01 SP4, 6 SP1, 6 and 7 on Windows XP SP2 and SP3, 6 and 7 on Windows Server 2003 SP1 and SP2, 7 on Windows Vista Gold and SP1, and 7 on Windows Server 2008 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a web page that triggers presence of an object in memory that was (1) not properly initialized or (2) deleted, aka "Uninitialized Memory Corruption Vulnerability."
The issue has been introduced in 03/22/2001. The weakness was shared 04/15/2009 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2009-0554. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2946 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100071 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Cumulative Security Update (MS09-014)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 6955.
