Details
A vulnerability was found in Apple iOS up to 5.01 (Smartphone Operating System) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown functionality of the component WebKit. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
WebKit, as used in Apple iOS before 5.1 and iTunes before 10.6, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption and application crash) via a crafted web site, a different vulnerability than other WebKit CVEs listed in APPLE-SA-2012-03-07-1 and APPLE-SA-2012-03-07-2.
The weakness was published 03/07/2012 by Cris Neckar (Slawomir Blazek) with Google Chrome Security Team as HT5190 as confirmed knowledge base article (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at support.apple.com. The public release has been coordinated with Apple. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-0632 since 01/12/2012. The attack may be initiated remotely. The successful exploitation needs a simple authentication. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 01/12/2025). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product increasing in the near future.
A private exploit has been developed by Cris Neckar. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 58319 (Apple iTunes < 10.6 Multiple Vulnerabilities (credentialed check)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 119974 (Apple iTunes Prior to 10.6 Multiple Vulnerabilities (APPLE-SA-2012-03-07-1)).
Upgrading to version 5.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
