Details
A vulnerability was found in Apple iOS up to 5.01 (Smartphone Operating System). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown part of the component WebKit. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
WebKit, as used in Apple iTunes before 10.6, allows man-in-the-middle attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption and application crash) via vectors related to iTunes Store browsing, a different vulnerability than other CVEs listed in APPLE-SA-2012-03-07-1.
The weakness was disclosed 03/07/2012 by Julien Chaffraix and Martin Barbella (Slawomir Blazek) with Chromium Development Team as HT5190 as confirmed knowledge base article (Website). The advisory is shared at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-0634 since 01/12/2012. The attack can be launched remotely. A single authentication is necessary for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 01/12/2025). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product increasing in the near future.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 58319 (Apple iTunes < 10.6 Multiple Vulnerabilities (credentialed check)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 119974 (Apple iTunes Prior to 10.6 Multiple Vulnerabilities (APPLE-SA-2012-03-07-1)).
Upgrading to version 5.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (58319), SecurityFocus (BID 52363†), OSVDB (79956†), Secunia (SA48274†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1026774†). The entries VDB-4460, VDB-4459, VDB-4574 and VDB-4726 are pretty similar. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
