Details
A vulnerability was found in Ghostscript up to 8.64 (Document Processing Software). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects the function big2_decode_symbol_dict of the file jbig2_symbol_dict.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Heap-based buffer overflow in the big2_decode_symbol_dict function (jbig2_symbol_dict.c) in the JBIG2 decoding library (jbig2dec) in Ghostscript 8.64, and probably earlier versions, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a PDF file with a JBIG2 symbol dictionary segment with a large run length value.
The bug was discovered 04/09/2009. The weakness was released 04/09/2009 by Alin Rad Pop with Secunia Research (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at securityfocus.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2009-0196 since 01/20/2009. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 79970 (GLSA-201412-17 : GPL Ghostscript: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 155930 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for Ghostscript (ELSA-2009-0421)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 7 years after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
