Upgrading the affected component is recommended.
Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 2.6.28 (Operating System). It has been classified as critical. Affected is the function __inet6_check_established. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:
The __inet6_check_established function in net/ipv6/inet6_hashtables.c in the Linux kernel before 2.6.29, when Network Namespace Support (aka NET_NS) is enabled, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and system crash) via vectors involving IPv6 packets.
The bug was discovered 02/26/2009. The weakness was published 04/22/2009 (Website). The advisory is available at kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2009-1360 since 04/22/2009. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 118 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 39444 (Mandriva Linux Security Advisory : kernel (MDVSA-2009:135)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks and running in the context l.
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
