Details
A vulnerability was found in FreeBSD 6.3/6.4/7.0/7.1/7.2 (Operating System) and classified as problematic. This issue affects some unknown processing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. Impacted is confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:
The db interface in libc in FreeBSD 6.3, 6.4, 7.0, 7.1, and 7.2-PRERELEASE does not properly initialize memory for Berkeley DB 1.85 database structures, which allows local users to obtain sensitive information by reading a database file.
The weakness was released 04/22/2009 by Xin Li (Website). The advisory is shared at security.freebsd.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2009-1436 since 04/27/2009. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 92514 (Juniper Junos FreeBSD libc db Information Disclosure (JSA10756)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Junos Local Security Checks and running in the context c.
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (32946), Tenable (92514), SecurityFocus (BID 34666†), OSVDB (53918†) and Secunia (SA34810†). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
