A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Microsoft Expression Design up to 4. This issue affects an unknown code of the component Library Loader. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a untrusted search path vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-426. The product searches for critical resources using an externally-supplied search path that can point to resources that are not under the product's direct control. Untrusted search path vulnerability in Microsoft Expression Design; Expression Design SP1; and Expression Design 2, 3, and 4 allows local users to gain privileges via a Trojan horse DLL in the current working directory, as demonstrated by a directory that contains a .xpr or .DESIGN file, aka "Expression Design Insecure Library Loading Vulnerability."
The weakness was shared 03/13/2012 by Laplinker as MS12-022 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at technet.microsoft.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-0016 since 11/09/2011. The attack may be initiated remotely. A simple authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1574 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
