A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Adobe Acrobat Reader 8.1.4/9.1 (Document Reader Software). This issue affects the function customDictionaryOpen of the component Javascript API. The manipulation of the argument second with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. The customDictionaryOpen spell method in the JavaScript API in Adobe Reader 9.1, 8.1.4, 7.1.1, and earlier on Linux and UNIX allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory corruption) or execute arbitrary code via a PDF file that triggers a call to this method with a long string in the second argument.
The weakness was shared 04/28/2009 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at us-cert.gov. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2009-1493 since 04/30/2009. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 39777 (GLSA-200907-06 : Adobe Reader: User-assisted execution of arbitrary code), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165643 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update Acrobat Reader (SUSE-SA:2009:027)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8077.
