A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Visual Studio 2008/2010 (Programming Tool Software). It has been declared as problematic. The weakness was shared 03/13/2012 by Laplinker as MS12-021 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared for download at technet.microsoft.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-0008 since 11/09/2011. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack needs to be approached locally. A single authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1574.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 58333 (MS12-021: Vulnerability in Visual Studio Could Allow Elevation of Privilege (2651019)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90787 (Microsoft Visual Studio Privilege Escalation Vulnerability (MS12-021)).
Applying the patch MS12-021 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
