Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in ubuntu Linux 8.10 (Operating System). This affects an unknown code block. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cryptographic issue vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-310. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:
system-tools-backends before 2.6.0-1ubuntu1.1 in Ubuntu 8.10, as used by "Users and Groups" in GNOME System Tools, hashes account passwords with 3DES and consequently limits effective password lengths to eight characters, which makes it easier for context-dependent attackers to successfully conduct brute-force password attacks.
The weakness was released 11/05/2008 (Website). The advisory is shared at launchpad.net. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2008-6792 since 05/07/2009. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1600 for this issue.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 38095 (Ubuntu 8.10 : system-tools-backends regression (USN-663-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks and running in the context l.
Upgrading to version 8.10 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
