A vulnerability, which was classified as very critical, has been found in Microsoft PowerPoint 2002 (Presentation Software). Affected by this issue is some unknown processing in the library PP4X32.DLL. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Stack-based buffer overflow in the PowerPoint 4.2 conversion filter (PP4X32.DLL) in Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2000 SP3, 2002 SP3, and 2003 SP3 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a large number of structures in sound data in a file that uses a PowerPoint 4.0 native file format, leading to memory corruption, aka "Legacy File Format Vulnerability," a different vulnerability than CVE-2009-0222, CVE-2009-0223, CVE-2009-0226, and CVE-2009-1137.

The weakness was disclosed 05/12/2009 by iDefense Labs with VeriSign iDefense Labs (Website). The advisory is shared for download at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2009-0227 since 01/20/2009. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $5k-$25k (estimation calculated on 08/11/2021).

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 38742 (MS09-017: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office PowerPoint Could Allow Remote Code Execution (967340)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
