Details
A vulnerability was found in Apple Mac OS X up to 10.5.1 (Operating System). It has been classified as problematic. This affects an unknown code block of the component International Components for Unicode. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-79. The product does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes user-controllable input before it is placed in output that is used as a web page that is served to other users. This is going to have an impact on integrity. The summary by CVE is:
International Components for Unicode (ICU) 4.0, 3.6, and other 3.x versions, as used in Apple Mac OS X 10.5 before 10.5.7, iPhone OS 1.0 through 2.2.1, iPhone OS for iPod touch 1.1 through 2.2.1, Fedora 9 and 10, and possibly other operating systems, does not properly handle invalid byte sequences during Unicode conversion, which might allow remote attackers to conduct cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks.
The bug was discovered 05/12/2009. The weakness was published 05/13/2009 by Chris Weber with Casaba Security (Website). The advisory is shared at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2009-0153 since 01/16/2009. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67878 (Oracle Linux 5 : icu (ELSA-2009-1122)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 116453 (Apple Safari 4.0 Not Installed).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
