Summary
A vulnerability has been found in Apple Safari and classified as critical. This affects an unknown function. Performing a manipulation results in code injection. This vulnerability is reported as CVE-2009-0945. No exploit exists. The affected component should be upgraded.
Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Apple Safari (Web Browser). This affects an unknown part. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Array index error in the insertItemBefore method in WebKit, as used in Apple Safari before 3.2.3 and 4 Public Beta, iPhone OS 1.0 through 2.2.1, iPhone OS for iPod touch 1.1 through 2.2.1, Google Chrome Stable before 1.0.154.65, and possibly other products allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a document with a SVGPathList data structure containing a negative index in the (1) SVGTransformList, (2) SVGStringList, (3) SVGNumberList, (4) SVGPathSegList, (5) SVGPointList, or (6) SVGLengthList SVGList object, which triggers memory corruption.
The weakness was disclosed 05/13/2009 by TippingPoint with TippingPoint's Zero Day Initiative (Website). The advisory is shared at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2009-0945 since 03/18/2009. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059 for this issue.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 75629 (openSUSE Security Update : libwebkit (openSUSE-SU-2011:0024-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165174 (SUSE Security Update for Multiple Packages (SUSE-SR:2011:002)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 years after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 6960.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (50477), Tenable (75629), SecurityFocus (BID 34924†), OSVDB (54500†) and Secunia (SA35056†). The entries VDB-3976, VDB-3977, VDB-3978 and VDB-23858 are pretty similar. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
