A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Ipsec-tools. Affected by this issue is the function eay_check_x509sign of the component User Authentication. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-399. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
Multiple memory leaks in Ipsec-tools before 0.7.2 allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory consumption) via vectors involving (1) signature verification during user authentication with X.509 certificates, related to the eay_check_x509sign function in src/racoon/crypto_openssl.c; and (2) the NAT-Traversal (aka NAT-T) keepalive implementation, related to src/racoon/nattraversal.c.
The weakness was presented 05/14/2009 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at sourceforge.net. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2009-1632 since 05/14/2009. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 41305 (SuSE9 Security Update : ipsec-tools (YOU Patch Number 12438)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 155913 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for ipsec-tools (ELSA-2009-1036)).
Upgrading to version 0.3 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
