Sun JRE 6 ActiveX Control deploytk.dll string memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Sun JRE 6 (Programming Language Software) and classified as very critical. This issue affects an unknown code in the library deploytk.dll of the component ActiveX Control. The manipulation of the argument string with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Multiple buffer overflows in the Deployment Toolkit ActiveX control in deploytk.dll 6.0.130.3 in Sun Java SE Runtime Environment (aka JRE) 6 Update 13 allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a long string argument to the (1) setInstallerType, (2) setAdditionalPackages, (3) compareVersion, (4) getStaticCLSID, or (5) launch method.

The bug was discovered 05/13/2009. The weakness was disclosed 05/18/2009 by shinnai (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at shinnai.net. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2009-1671 since 05/18/2009. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 04/13/2025). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product decreasing in the near future.

The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 5 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 116431 (Sun Java Runtime Environment ActiveX Control Multiple Remote Vulnerabilities).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 10919.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (50508), Exploit-DB (8665), SecurityFocus (BID 34931†), OSVDB (55052†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-22300†). The entry VDB-48228 is pretty similar. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
