A vulnerability was found in Sun JRE 6 (Programming Language Software) and classified as very critical. This issue affects an unknown code in the library deploytk.dll of the component ActiveX Control. The manipulation of the argument string with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Multiple buffer overflows in the Deployment Toolkit ActiveX control in deploytk.dll 6.0.130.3 in Sun Java SE Runtime Environment (aka JRE) 6 Update 13 allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a long string argument to the (1) setInstallerType, (2) setAdditionalPackages, (3) compareVersion, (4) getStaticCLSID, or (5) launch method.
The bug was discovered 05/13/2009. The weakness was disclosed 05/18/2009 by shinnai (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at shinnai.net. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2009-1671 since 05/18/2009. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 04/13/2025).
