The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Stack-based buffer overflow in the btFiles::BuildFromMI function (trunk/btfiles.cpp) in Enhanced CTorrent (aka dTorrent) 3.3.2 and probably earlier, and CTorrent 1.3.4, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via a Torrent file containing a long path.
The bug was discovered 04/17/2009. The weakness was shared 05/22/2009 by Michael Brooks (Website). The advisory is available at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2009-1759 since 05/21/2009. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed in Python. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 35 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70995 (GLSA-201311-11 : CTorrent: User-assisted arbitrary code execution), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 116477 (Debian Update for ctorrent (DSA-1817-1)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 5 years after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (49959), Exploit-DB (8470), Tenable (70995), SecurityFocus (BID 34584†) and OSVDB (53943†). If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
