Details
A vulnerability has been found in Apple QuickTime up to 7.0.1 (Multimedia Player Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown processing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Apple QuickTime before 7.6.2 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (application crash) via crafted image description atoms in an Apple video file, related to a "sign extension issue."
The bug was discovered 06/01/2009. The weakness was disclosed 06/01/2009 by Roee Hay with IBM Rational Application Security (Website). The advisory is shared at vupen.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2009-0955 since 03/18/2009. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059 for this issue.
A public exploit has been developed in Python. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 38989 (QuickTime < 7.6.2 Multiple Vulnerabilities (Mac OS X)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 116443 (Apple QuickTime 7.6.2 Not Installed).
Upgrading to version 7.0.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8829.
