The PDF XSS protection feature in ModSecurity before 2.5.8 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (Apache httpd crash) via a request for a PDF file that does not use the GET method.
The bug was discovered 03/11/2009. The weakness was disclosed 03/11/2009 by Steve Grubb (ERNE) (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at redhat.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2009-1903 since 06/03/2009. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1592.004 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 35926 (Fedora 9 : mod_security-2.5.9-1.fc9 (2009-2654)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 116306 (Fedora Update for mod_security (FEDORA-2009-2654,FEDORA-2009-2686)).
Upgrading to version 2.5.7 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
