IBM DB2 9.1/9.5 DRDA Services memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in IBM DB2 9.1/9.5 (Database Software). This vulnerability affects an unknown function of the component DRDA Services. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The DRDA Services component in IBM DB2 9.1 before FP7 and 9.5 before FP4 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory corruption and application crash) via an IPv6 address in the correlation token in the APPID string, as demonstrated by an APPID string sent by the third-party DataDirect JDBC driver 3.7.32.

The bug was discovered 05/28/2009. The weakness was disclosed 06/03/2009 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at www-01.ibm.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2009-1906 since 06/03/2009. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 6 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 39007 (IBM DB2 < 9.5 Fix Pack 4 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Databases and running in the context r.

Upgrading to version 9.5 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (50908), Tenable (39007), SecurityFocus (BID 35171†), OSVDB (54913†) and Secunia (SA35235†). The entries VDB-48411, VDB-51173, VDB-51172 and VDB-51171 are pretty similar. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
