The ListView control in the Client GUI (AClient.exe) in Symantec Altiris Deployment Solution 6.x before 6.9.355 SP1 allows local users to gain SYSTEM privileges and execute arbitrary commands via a "Shatter" style attack on the "command prompt" hidden GUI button to (1) overwrite the CommandLine parameter to cmd.exe to use SYSTEM privileges and (2) modify the DLL that is loaded using the LoadLibrary API function.
The bug was discovered 10/20/2008. The weakness was published 10/20/2008 by Brett Moore with Insomnia Security (Website). The advisory is shared at vupen.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2008-6827 since 06/08/2009. The exploitability is told to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. A authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. Upgrading to version 6.9.176 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
