HP OpenView Network Node Manager up to 7.52 stack-based overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in HP OpenView Network Node Manager up to 7.52 (Network Management Software). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown code of the component Node Manager. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Stack-based buffer overflow in rping in HP OpenView Network Node Manager (OV NNM) 7.51 and 7.53, when used with SNMP (aka HPOvNNM.HPOVSNMP) before 1.30.009 and MIB (aka HPOvNNM.HPOVMIB) before 1.30.009, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service via unknown vectors.

The weakness was presented 06/11/2009 with Hewlett-Packard (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at labs.idefense.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2009-1420 since 04/24/2009. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept.

Upgrading to version 7.53 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8826.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (51033), SecurityFocus (BID 35267†), Secunia (SA35408†), SecurityTracker (ID 1022360†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-40748†).
