Details
A vulnerability was found in Adobe Acrobat (Document Reader Software) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown part. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Multiple heap-based buffer overflows in Adobe Reader 7 and Acrobat 7 before 7.1.3, Adobe Reader 8 and Acrobat 8 before 8.1.6, and Adobe Reader 9 and Acrobat 9 before 9.1.2 might allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (application crash) via a crafted PDF file with a JPX (aka JPEG2000) stream that triggers heap memory corruption.
The weakness was shared 06/11/2009 by Will Dormann with CERT (Website). The advisory is shared at us-cert.gov. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2009-1861 since 06/01/2009. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 40805 (Adobe Acrobat < 9.1.2 / 8.1.6 / 7.1.3 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165648 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update Acrobat Reader (SUSE-SA:2009:035)).
Upgrading to version 7.0.4 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (51020), Tenable (40805), SecurityFocus (BID 35295†), Secunia (SA34580†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1022361†). The entries VDB-48570, VDB-48568, VDB-48567 and VDB-48566 are related to this item. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
