Sun JRE 1.5.0/1.5.0 11-b03 apple.laf.CColourUIResource first code injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Sun JRE 1.5.0/1.5.0 11-b03 (Programming Language Software). It has been classified as critical. This affects the function apple.laf.CColourUIResource of the file apple.laf.CColourUIResource. The manipulation of the argument first with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

The Aqua Look and Feel for Java implementation in Java 1.5 on Mac OS X 10.5 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a call to the undocumented apple.laf.CColourUIResource constructor with a crafted value in the first argument, which is dereferenced as a pointer.

The bug was discovered 06/16/2009. The weakness was presented 06/16/2009 with Zero Day Initiative (Website). The advisory is shared at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2009-1719 since 05/20/2009. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 39435 (Mac OS X : Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 4), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 116440 (Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 4 and Java for Mac OS X 10.4 Release 9 (APPLE-SA-2009-06-15-1, APPLE-SA-2009-06-15-2)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 6800.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (51185), Tenable (39435), SecurityFocus (BID 35401†), OSVDB (56457†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-22634†). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
