libzip 0.10 zip_open.c zip_readcdir ZIP File memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in libzip 0.10 and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is the function zip_readcdir of the file zip_open.c. The manipulation as part of a ZIP File leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Heap-based buffer overflow in the _zip_readcdir function in zip_open.c in libzip 0.10 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via a zip archive with the number of directories set to 0, related to an "incorrect loop construct."

The weakness was shared 03/20/2012 by Thomas Klausner as not defined mailinglist post (Website). The advisory is available at nih.at. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2012-1162 since 02/14/2012. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74575 (openSUSE Security Update : libzip (openSUSE-SU-2012:0416-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l.

Upgrading to version 0.10.1 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at hg.nih.at. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
