Sun OpenSolaris up to Snv 108 Kernel Patch crgetlabel denial of service

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Sun OpenSolaris (Operating System). Affected is the function crgetlabel of the component Kernel Patch. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:

Unspecified vulnerability in the udp subsystem in the kernel in Sun Solaris 10, and OpenSolaris snv_90 through snv_108, when Solaris Trusted Extensions is enabled, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (panic) via unspecified vectors involving the crgetlabel function, related to a "TX panic." NOTE: this issue exists because of a regression in earlier kernel patches.

The bug was discovered 06/30/2009. The weakness was shared 07/02/2009 (Website). The advisory is available at sunsolve.sun.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2009-2297 since 07/02/2009. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 116500 (Sun Solaris Kernel Denial of Service Vulnerability (1020634.1)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
