Details
A vulnerability was found in Apache HTTP Server up to 2.3.6 (Web Server). It has been classified as critical. Affected is the function FcgidMaxProcessesPerClass of the file fcgid_spawn_ctl.c of the component mod_fcgid. The manipulation as part of a HTTP Requests leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:
fcgid_spawn_ctl.c in the mod_fcgid module 2.3.6 for the Apache HTTP Server does not recognize the FcgidMaxProcessesPerClass directive for a virtual host, which makes it easier for remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory consumption) via a series of HTTP requests that triggers a process count higher than the intended limit.
The weakness was shared 03/15/2012 by Kurt Seifried (Website). The advisory is shared for download at bugs.debian.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2012-1181 since 02/14/2012. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 58393 (Debian DSA-2436-1 : libapache2-mod-fcgid - inactive resource limits), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l.
Upgrading to version 2.3.6-1.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 4 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
