Summary
A vulnerability labeled as problematic has been found in FCKeditor. Impacted is an unknown function of the component Connector Module. Executing a manipulation can lead to path traversal. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2009-2265. Additionally, an exploit exists. The affected component should be upgraded.
Details
A vulnerability has been found in FCKeditor and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown part of the component Connector Module. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Multiple directory traversal vulnerabilities in FCKeditor before 2.6.4.1 allow remote attackers to create executable files in arbitrary directories via directory traversal sequences in the input to unspecified connector modules, as exploited in the wild for remote code execution in July 2009, related to the file browser and the editor/filemanager/connectors/ directory.
The weakness was released 07/05/2009 as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared for download at ocert.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2009-2265 since 06/29/2009. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.
A public exploit has been developed in Perl. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 39806 (FCKeditor 'CurrentFolder' Arbitrary File Upload), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 12291 (ClanSphere FCKeditor "CurrentFolder" Information Disclosure and Arbitrary File Upload Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 2.3 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8301.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (51569), Exploit-DB (50057), Tenable (39806), SecurityFocus (BID 31812†) and Secunia (SA35833†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-46619 and VDB-48869. VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
