Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox 3.5 (Web Browser). It has been declared as very critical. This vulnerability affects the function escape. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

js/src/jstracer.cpp in the Just-in-time (JIT) JavaScript compiler (aka TraceMonkey) in Mozilla Firefox 3.5 before 3.5.1 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via certain use of the escape function that triggers access to uninitialized memory locations, as originally demonstrated by a document containing P and FONT elements.

The weakness was presented 07/15/2009 by Simon Berry-Byrne as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared for download at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2009-2477 since 07/15/2009. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 12/07/2024). The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.

It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as highly functional. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 39867 (FreeBSD : mozilla -- corrupt JIT state after deep return from native function (c1ef9b33-72a6-11de-82ea-0030843d3802)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 116510 (Mozilla Firefox 3.5 TraceMonkey JavaScript Engine Uninitialized Memory Vulnerability (MFSA 2009-41)).

Upgrading to version 3.5 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8324.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (51694), Tenable (39867), SecurityFocus (BID 35660†), Secunia (SA35798†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-22916†).
