A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox (Web Browser). It has been classified as critical. This affects the function setTimeout. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. The setTimeout function in Mozilla Firefox before 3.0.12 does not properly preserve object wrapping, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary JavaScript with chrome privileges via a crafted call, related to XPCNativeWrapper.
The weakness was shared 07/22/2009 by Peter Van der Beken (moz_bug_r_a4) with Martijn Wargers (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at vupen.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2009-2471 since 07/15/2009. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059.007 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. Upgrading to version 1.0 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8756.
