A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Zen Cart up to 1.3.8 (Warehouse Management System Software). Affected is an unknown code block of the file admin/includes/languages/english.php of the component htaccess. The manipulation of the argument _SESSION[language] with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
** DISPUTED ** Directory traversal vulnerability in admin/includes/languages/english.php in Zen Cart 1.3.8a, 1.3.8, and earlier, when .htaccess is not supported, allows remote attackers to include and execute arbitrary local files via a .. (dot dot) in the _SESSION[language] parameter. NOTE: the vendor disputes this issue, stating "at worst, the use of this vulnerability will reveal some local file paths."
The weakness was disclosed 07/10/2008 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at zen-cart.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2008-6878 since 07/27/2009. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details and a public exploit are known. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The real existence of this vulnerability is still doubted at the moment. By approaching the search of inurl:admin/includes/languages/english.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking.
