Details
A vulnerability was found in Mozilla SeaMonkey (Web Browser). It has been classified as critical. This affects some unknown processing of the component Network Security Service. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Mozilla Network Security Services (NSS) before 3.12.3, Firefox before 3.0.13, Thunderbird before 2.0.0.23, and SeaMonkey before 1.1.18 do not properly handle a \0 character in a domain name in the subject s Common Name (CN) field of an X.509 certificate, which allows man-in-the-middle attackers to spoof arbitrary SSL servers via a crafted certificate issued by a legitimate Certification Authority. NOTE: this was originally reported for Firefox before 3.5.
The weakness was shared 08/01/2009 by Juan Pablo Lopez Yacubian as Bug 510251 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2009-2408 since 07/09/2009. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67924 (Oracle Linux 3 : seamonkey (ELSA-2009-1432)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 116836 (Sun Solaris Thunderbird Related to SSL Certificates Arbitrary Code Execution Vulnerabilities (1021030.1)).
Upgrading to version 1.0.9 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (52141), Tenable (67924), SecurityFocus (BID 35803†), OSVDB (56723†) and Secunia (SA36088†). The entry VDB-49241 is related to this item. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
