The TAR file parser in ClamAV 0.96.4 and Quick Heal (aka Cat QuickHeal) 11.00 allows remote attackers to bypass malware detection via a POSIX TAR file with an initial [aliases] character sequence. NOTE: this may later be SPLIT into multiple CVEs if additional information is published showing that the error occurred independently in different TAR parser implementations.
The weakness was presented 03/19/2012 by Suman Jana and Vitaly Shmatikov as confirmed mailinglist post (Bugtraq). It is possible to read the advisory at seclists.org. The vendor was not involved in the public release. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2012-1419 since 02/29/2012. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
