A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Network Security Services up to 3.12.2 (Web Browser). It has been rated as very critical. Affected by this issue is the function cert_TestHostName of the component Network Security Service. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Heap-based buffer overflow in a regular-expression parser in Mozilla Network Security Services (NSS) before 3.12.3, as used in Firefox, Thunderbird, SeaMonkey, Evolution, Pidgin, and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM), allows remote SSL servers to cause a denial of service (application crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via a long domain name in the subject s Common Name (CN) field of an X.509 certificate, related to the cert_TestHostName function.

The weakness was presented 08/03/2009 by Moxie Marlinspike (Website). The advisory is available at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2009-2404. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 08/13/2021).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67903 (Oracle Linux 3 : seamonkey (ELSA-2009-1185)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
