A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Network Security Services up to 3.12.2 (Web Browser). It has been rated as very critical. Affected by this issue is the function cert_TestHostName of the component Network Security Service. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Heap-based buffer overflow in a regular-expression parser in Mozilla Network Security Services (NSS) before 3.12.3, as used in Firefox, Thunderbird, SeaMonkey, Evolution, Pidgin, and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM), allows remote SSL servers to cause a denial of service (application crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via a long domain name in the subject s Common Name (CN) field of an X.509 certificate, related to the cert_TestHostName function.
The weakness was presented 08/03/2009 by Moxie Marlinspike (Website). The advisory is available at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2009-2404. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 08/13/2021).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67903 (Oracle Linux 3 : seamonkey (ELSA-2009-1185)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 116539 (Mozilla Firefox Security Update (MFSA 2009-42,MFSA 2009-43)).
Upgrading to version 3.12.3 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8761.
