The proxy mechanism implementation in Sun Java Runtime Environment (JRE) in JDK and JRE 6 before Update 15, and JDK and JRE 5.0 before Update 20, allows remote attackers to bypass intended access restrictions and connect to arbitrary sites via unspecified vectors, related to a declaration that lacks the final keyword.

The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 43774 (CentOS 5 : java-1.6.0-openjdk (CESA-2009:1201)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 185074 (HP-UX Running Java Multiple Vulnerabilities (HPSBUX02476)).
Upgrading to version 5.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
