A vulnerability was found in eTrust eTrust Vet Antivirus (Anti-Malware Software) (version unknown) and classified as critical. The ELF file parser in Norman Antivirus 6.06.12, eSafe 7.0.17.0, CA eTrust Vet Antivirus 36.1.8511, Fortinet Antivirus 4.2.254.0, and Panda Antivirus 10.0.2.7 allows remote attackers to bypass malware detection via an ELF file with a modified identsize field. NOTE: this may later be SPLIT into multiple CVEs if additional information is published showing that the error occurred independently in different ELF parser implementations.
The weakness was presented 03/19/2012 by Suman Jana and Vitaly Shmatikov as not defined mailinglist post (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared for download at seclists.org. The public release happened without coordination with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2012-1440 since 02/29/2012. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.
